Rockland is the largest community we work in outside Ottawa, and the driveway work here splits neatly between the newer subdivisions up the hill and the older streets closer to the Ottawa River.
This is not the City of Ottawa. Ottawa's Access By-law (No. 2026-139) and Zoning By-law (No. 2026-50) do not apply here, so the Ottawa driveway-width and access-permit rules described elsewhere on this site are not your rules.
Your municipality has its own entrance permit and driveway requirements, and if your frontage is on a county road or a provincial highway rather than a local street, the permit comes from that road authority instead. We'll confirm which applies to your address before you spend anything — but check with your own municipal office too. Anyone who quotes you Ottawa's by-law numbers out here has not done their homework.
What we can tell you
What does not change across municipal boundaries is the ground and the weather. The build standards below are the same whether you are in Rockland or in Ottawa, and they are what actually determines whether a driveway is still flat in ten years.
Building for this ground
- Slope. Rockland has real topography, and a sloped driveway changes the build: drainage has to be designed rather than assumed, and the transition at the road edge has to happen within the available distance or you scrape every low car that visits.
- Runoff on a hill. A driveway on a slope is a channel. Where it discharges matters as much as how it is built, and "toward the street" is not always available.
- Clay and frost below, as everywhere in the region — proper base depth, compaction in lifts, geotextile over the subgrade.
- Permeable on a slope is possible but needs care: water runs across the surface faster than it soaks in, so the design has to slow it down. We'll tell you if your grade rules it out.
What we do here
Installation runs roughly April to mid-November. Heavy clay in the townships holds spring water longer than city lots, so an April start is often optimistic even when the calendar says otherwise. Base and paver work can run into early November; polymeric sand stops curing reliably in cold damp weather. Expect 6–10 weeks from signed quote to crew, and note that August onward is usually booked by July.
