What driveway widening costs in Ottawa

Real ranges, the line items that catch people out, and why a small widening costs more per square foot than a big one.

Every cost guide for this trade quotes a per-square-foot rate and stops. The rate is the easy part. What decides your final number is how much of the job is edge — and a widening is almost all edge.

The rates

Installed interlock rates in the Ottawa market, 2026. These are market ranges, not our quoted prices — a real price needs a measure.
TierInstalled, per sq ftWhat you get
Basic$18–22Standard concrete paver, straightforward access, simple rectangle
Mid-range$25–30Better paver, borders, some cutting, proper base depth for a driveway
Premium$30–40+Natural stone or premium lines, curves, steps, drainage work

For reference, paver material alone runs roughly $3–7 per square foot for basic concrete, $7–15 for premium concrete and $15–30 or more for natural stone. That gap is why two quotes for "the same" driveway can differ by thousands.

What a widening actually comes to

Indicative totals for widening work only, excluding permits, culvert and curb.
ScopeTypical areaIndicative total
Narrow strip down one side120–200 sq ft$3,000–5,500
Full single-car widening200–350 sq ft$4,000–9,000
Widening plus a parking pad350–550 sq ft$7,000–15,000
Full driveway replacement, for comparison600–900 sq ft$6,000–12,000+

Why small widenings cost more per foot

Several costs are fixed no matter how narrow the strip is:

  • Mobilisation. Getting a crew, a plate compactor, a saw and a dump trailer to your house costs the same for 150 square feet as for 800.
  • Excavation and disposal. A driveway base wants real depth, and the spoil has to go somewhere. Disposal is charged by volume, not by how tidy the shape is.
  • Cutting and matching. A widening has a long seam against existing work. Every paver along it gets cut, and matching an existing colour that has weathered for a decade is slow, fussy work.
  • Edge restraint. The new outer edge needs proper restraint or it will spread. That is linear cost, and a narrow strip has almost as much edge as a wide one.

The line items people forget

  • Access permit fee — set by the City, due at application, and non-refundable. Budget it as a real cost and confirm the current figure with the City. (Placeholder to fill in: PERMIT_FEE_TODO.)
  • Road cut permit — a second permit, required after the access permit is approved, before work in the right of way.
  • Culvert work — in rural and village areas, widening an entrance usually means extending or rebuilding the culvert, which needs its own permit and is a genuine excavation job. More on rural entrances →
  • Curb cut — where there is a curb, widening the access means altering it. Curb cuts →
  • Utility locates — Ontario One Call before anyone digs. Free to request, but it takes time, so it belongs in your schedule if not your budget.
  • Drainage. More hard surface means more runoff. Sometimes that is free to solve, sometimes it is a swale or a soakaway.
The offset worth checking

If you build the widening in permeable pavement and your address sits in a Priority Stormwater Retrofit Area, the City's Rain Ready Ottawa program rebates up to $5,000. On a typical widening that can cover most of the job. It has to be approved before you start — the rebate is not retroactive.

How to compare two quotes properly

Ask all three of these and the cheap quote often stops being the cheap quote:

  1. How deep is the granular base, and is it compacted in lifts? Driveway base is not patio base. This is the single biggest hidden difference between prices.
  2. Who files the access permit, and is the fee in your price?
  3. Do you hold a City of Ottawa hardscaping contractor licence? It is mandatory for any business paving an access here.
